Welcome (Back) to DERRY as second season confirmed….

After the first season of HBO‘s Welcome to Derry was a critical success, a second run of the IT spin-off/prequel seemed a foregone conclusion.  It’s been over a year since that first season broadcast and many might have presumed that such a sophomore outing was already in active production – especially as much has been discussed about where the story will go next.

However, it’s only today that the renewal is officially announced, so it could be another year until the next run debuts on HBO Max. After Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane were co-showrunners for the first season, , Kane will now handle those duties himself going forward.

The series expands on Andy Muschietti’s recent IT movies, adapted from Stephen King’s classic tome. In his movies (rather than the classic 1990 tv mini-series), the films split the narrative into two chapters… 2017’s IT: Chapter One release told of the childhood days of its main characters in the 1980s with 2019’s IT: Chapter Two followed their modern counterparts.

Welcome to Derry goes back into the 1950s to further explore the mythology of Derry and the origins of the seemingly demonic Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård, reprising his role from the movies). The second season will continue going backwards and will be set in 1935, in the middle of America’s Great Depression.  It ‘revolves around the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror…’

“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”
