Law and… Orgasm? Amazon makes a date with SEX CRIMINALS…

Image Comics have a reputation for cutting-edge content and ideas. In a market that began rapidly expanding, they were one of the few publishers who genuinely threatened to upset the apple-cart that had been dominated for so long by Marvel and DC. This is the company that brought you The Walking Dead, Invincible, Spawn, Saga, Criminal and Revival to name but a handful.

But even as far as cutting-edge goes, the conception of Sex Criminals was a pretty out-there idea.  Written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Chip Zdarsky it was first launched in 2013 and tells the story of Suzie, a relatively normal young girl leading a relatively mundane life but who finds she has a seemingly unique ability: whenever she has a sexual experience, she stops time. It takes a lot of getting used to and there are hundreds of questions she has about how and why it happens. But she becomes resigned that it’s all part of the experience… until she meets Jon. Jon’s a guy with a similar… ability. So what does a new couple who can stop time on every occasion they have sex do? Well, use it to rob banks, of course!

Perhaps it was only a matter of time before someone thought this would make a great television show. News started filtering through earlier this year and now we know that the series will go ahead with an eight-episode order from executive producers Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon and Tze Chun through Amazon MGM Studios, Writer/director Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels, Hedda, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple) will helm the first two episodes and also act as an executive producer. It will star Imogen Poots (Hedda, 28 Weeks Later, I Kill Giants, Green Room, Fright Night, Outer Range) and John Reynolds (Search Party, Stranger Things, Yellow Jackets).

Will it be a success? We think it’ll make money hand over fist.
