Spider-man UnCaged: That was then, this is NOIR… (trailers)

There are technically two trailers out for the next Spider-man project, though neither is for the Tom Holland’s Brand New Day outing. Instead, we have Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly in Amazon Prime Video’s  Spider-Noir and you can see the trailer in either ‘authentic black and white’ or ‘true-hue full color’.

The series, due to air in May (and which will be able to be viewed in both formats) is based on the alt-world multiverse of the Spider-man mythos that is set in a Depression-era New York style with Cage playing the private detective suddenly imbued with abilities that lead him to taking up the alter-ego of ‘The Spider’… and who must take on the eclectic, yet strangely familiar villains of the city. Cage’s supporting cast includes Lamorne Morris (as Robbie Robertson), Li Jun Li (as Cat Hardy), Karen Rodriguez (as Janet), Abraham Popoola (as ‘Tombstone’), Jack Huston (as ‘Sandman’), and Brendan Gleeson (as ‘Silvermane’). The series will very much play into not just a different era of stories but also the idea of a main character who is not young and idealistic, but older and more world-weary.

Comic fans will know that ‘Ben Reilly’ is also the name of an existing character in the mainstream Spider-man mythos, the result of a cloning experiment that saw another Peter/Spider-man. The clone was believed to have died (in a comic that came out in 1975) but it was later revealed during the 1990s run in the comics that he’d survived, moved away and assumed another identity. He’s appeared in different guises, as friend and enemy, since.

In the comics, the unconnected Spider-Noir story exists in the Earth-90214 reality.
