Super TROOPER? Duncan Jones ready to go ROGUE…
It’s been talked about for some time, but now there’s an actual teaser for Duncan Jones’ next film – an animated adaptation of classic 2000AD comic character Rogue Trooper. That, of course, is the comic that also produced the likes of Judge Dredd.
Rogue Trooper was created by Gerry Finley-Day and artist Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) tells the story of a soldier on a future battlefield. Combatants personalities can be stored on bio-chips and our main character carries weaponry that hosts some of his fallen comrades.
Though it could be some time before we see more, the first glimpse seems to suggest a project that is sticking pretty close to the imagery of the source material. The official description of the story reads: Starring Aneurin Banard (The Goldfinch, Dunkirk), Rogue Trooper tells the story of ’19’, a Genetic Infantryman/ who finds himself the sole-survivor of an invasion force. Desperate to track down the traitor who sold him and his comrades out, the super-soldier is accompanied by three killed-in-action squad-mates whose personalities have been stored in his gun, helmet and backpack.
Other members of the cats include Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger, What If…, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses, Dunkirk), Daryl McCormack (Bad Sisters, Good Luck to you – Leo Grande), Reece Shearsmith (Inside No.9, Saltburn), Diane Morgan (Cunk on Earth), Alice Lowe (Black Mirror), Asa Butterfield (Sex Education, Hugo) and Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings). Ade Edmondson (The Young Ones, Alien: Earth) apparently all provides a bio-chipped voice for a pair of boots.
No word if Bean will make it out of this alive.
Jones has been a fan of the 2000AD title and, in particular, Rogue Trooper for decades and this was very much a passion project for him. The film – which doesn’t yet have a specific release date – is produced by Jones’ frequent collaborator Stuart Fenegan (Moon, Source Code, Mute and Warcraft), Jason and Chris Kingsley (Dredd, School’s Out Forever).
