Donnie Yen set to raise CAINE for JOHN WICK spin-off…
The John Wick franchise – and its ongoing sequels and spin-off features – has become something of a phenomena in recent years. Not only has Keanu Reeves returned a number of times, continuing to avenge his canine friend and take-out anyone who gets in his way, but we’ve also met a number of his fellow assassins, both friends and foes. There was even a mini-series looking at the origins of The Continental, the safe-ground on which they sometimes meet.
Last year, the seductive Ana de Armas was under the spotlight in Ballerina which received mixed reviews but certainly kept up the close-quarter combat quotient. But now there’s a second spin-off and begins filming next month. This time the movie will concentrate on Caine, as played by martial-arts legend Donnie Yen. The character first appeared in 2023’s fourth John Wick movie in which Wick helped free Caine from his obligations to ’The High Table’ overlords. The new film will take place after those events. Not only will Yen star but he will also direct from a script by Mattson Tomlin. (At this point the Caine title remains unconfirmed).
“What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero,” said Yen. “This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story. As both director and actor, I’m excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I’ve learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new.”
This wouldn’t be the first time that Yen has played a visually-impaired fighter. Most famously, the Ip-Man himself played Chirrut Imwe in Star Wars: Rogue One.
It would seem that another John Wick character, Akira (played by Rina Sawayama) will also appear.
On the production side, John Wick producers including Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Chad Stahelski (the latter of whom is currently at work directing the Highlander reboot) are involved. Yen, of course, made his western industry breakthrough in Highlander: Endgame and continues to be a powerhouse of eastern cinema and beyond.
