Punishing Schedule: Bernthal to make ‘ONE LAST KILL’ in May…
Marvel and Disney+ have confirmed more details on the Punisher tv movie due this spring…
Punisher: One Last Kill is the third of Marvel‘s special presentations (following Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special) and will now be broadcast on 12th May. The sixty minute presentation was co-written by star Jon Bernthal with Reinaldo Marcus Green, who also directs.
During promotion for last year’s The Accountant 2, Bernthal confirmed that the special and the Punisher / Frank Castle would not shed any of the mature-content associated with the character.
“It’s going to be dark; Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It’s not going to be easy. I don’t know if that’s the Netflix tone then that’s what it’s going to be… it will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.”
The character who first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1974 (taking shot at Spider-man) has been played on screen by the likes of Dolph Lundgren , the late Ray Stevenson and Thomas Jane and was voiced by Bernthal’s The Walking Dead co-star Norman Reedus when he appeared as a supporting character in the animated Iron Man: Rise of Technovore created by Japanese studio Madhouse) but Jon Bernthal is now the longest-serving incarnation.
The famous Punisher logo has been tweaked slightly after a controversy that saw some military officers and even some police-officers wearing the symbol and championing the character. Marvel and Punisher creator Gerry Conway said that showed a fundamental and troubling misunderstanding of Frank Castle / the Punisher who is not supposed to be a hero.
Bernthal’s version debuted in the Netflix version of Daredevil, moving on to two seasons of his own show on that platform between 2017-2019 and reprising the role for the first season of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. The character will also appear in Spider-man: Brand New Day out at the end of July with apparent story-elements complementing each other.
One Last Kill will actually debut on the same day as the Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 finale which may also indicate more connective tissue there.
